1. The chapter 1 title "One The Hearth and the Salamander" connects with Montage. The first chapter explains what the home life of Montage is which is depression. The job of Montage is a firefighter which that's why on the title it uses the word salamander.
2. The quote "It was a pleasure to burn. It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, To see things blackened and changed" mostly expresses how Montage is depressed.
3. He characterized a water hose with a great python because it shows how Montage has a sad life. So it is negative.
